Who we are

The Australasian Radiation Protection Society Inc (ARPS) is a professional society of members engaged in one or more aspects of radiation protection.

The Australian Radiation Protection Society was founded in 1975 and has more than 250 members engaged in radiation protection activities. Members are engaged in a variety of activities designed to ensure the safe use of both ionizing and non-ionizing radiation for a wide variety of applications, in medicine, pure and applied science, industry and mining. The Society was renamed the Australasian Radiation Protection Society in 1997 to reflect the increasing involvement of members from outside of Australia, particularly from New Zealand.

ARPS is an Associate Society of the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA).

ARPS publishes a quarterly journal, Radiation Protection in Australasia, and a quarterly Newsletter for its members.

The primary objective of the Society is to promote the principles and practice of radiation protection, and to this end it seeks to:

* establish and maintain professional standards of radiation protection practice

* encourage co-operation among persons engaged in radiation protection activities

* provide for and give support to scientific meetings on topics related to radiation protection

* encourage publications in the field of radiation protection.

Conferences

ARPS holds a conference every year. This year, the Conference will be held in Canberra from Sunday 21st to Wednesday 24th September 2008, with post Conference tours and workshops planned for Thursday 25th September.  The venue of the Conference is the Hotel Realm, Canberra's newest 5 star hotel, which is located in the Parliamentary Triangle.

A pre-registration cocktail evening at Parliament House on Sunday 21st and the Conference Dinner at the Australian War Memorial on Tuesday 23rd September will form part of the ever popular social side of the ARPS Conference.  The timing of ARPS 2008 has been chosen to coincide with the annual major tourist attraction in Canberra - Floriade.

Session topics and workshops suggested for ARPS2008 include, but are not limited to:

Radiation Protection Framework, Radiation protection in NIR, UV Radiation Protection and Safety of Solaria, Occupational and Operational Radiation Protection, Radiation Protection of the Public, Radiation Protection of the Environment, Safety and Security of Radioactive Materials and Nuclear Forensic and Attribution

We would welcome your ideas for other topics or workshops that you think would be beneficial to the development of ionising and non-ionising radiation protection.

Like the previous Conferences, ARPS 2008 will be an important professional forum for the Australian and the regional radiation protection community to meet and exchange ideas, enhance their understanding of current issues and discuss the challenges that confront society on the radiation safety, health and environmental fronts.  We urge you to not only to join us in Canberra but also to take an active role in the Conference by presenting a paper or a poster or leading a workshop session.

If you have any questions about this event, please contact the conference organisers, Leishman Associates on telephone (03) 6234 7844.

We look forward to welcoming you to the nation’s capital!

Accreditation in Ionising Radiation Safety within Australia and New Zealand

This accreditation scheme has been designed as an appropriate level of study and experience for professionals undertaking the duties of a Radiation Protection Advisor. The required reading and practical experience are intended as a broad introduction to the technical principles that will be used throughout a career in radiation safety.

The Accreditation in Ionising Radiation Safety within Australia and New Zealand is sponsored by the following professional societies:

  • Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM),
  • Australasian Radiation Protection Society (ARPS), and
  • Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists Incorporated (AIOH).

The Accreditation in Ionising Radiation Safety within Australia and New Zealand is administered by the Australasian Radiation Protection Accreditation Board Inc herein referred to as The Board. The Board consists of two members appointed by each of the Sponsoring Societies. The Board elects its own Chairman and appoints Examiners as required. Accreditation is available to members of the three Sponsoring Societies.

It is envisaged that many candidates will be recent graduates in science or engineering. The standard for accreditation has been set so that with part-time study they can complete the syllabus and gain accreditation within one year of taking up an appointment in which they can gain relevant experience. Other graduates and non-graduates will be accepted as candidates provided they can show adequate evidence that they have the ability to achieve the required entrance standard which includes skills in physics, chemistry, mathematics, computation, anatomy and physiology. Non-graduate candidates should contact the Chairperson to discuss their entrance to the course; they will be assessed on the basis of other relevant courses, examinations and professional activities that they have completed.

To obtain accreditation, all candidates will be required to complete both a theoretical and a practical component of study.

In order to complete the theoretical component of the accreditation, a candidate must:

1.1. satisfy the Board that he/she has a suitable level of education,

1.2. complete a self-paced reading and numerical problem solving program,

1.3. pass a written examination based on the prescribed reading material and the requirement for adequate skills in numerical computation,

In order to complete the practical component of the accreditation, a candidate must:

1.4. gain practical experience in the use of radiation monitoring equipment,

1.5. complete an assignment (approximately 5000 words) in which the candidate prepares a radiation protection program for a nominated institution or commercial operation,

1.6. complete twelve months relevant experience preferably under the supervision of an accredited Radiation Protection Advisor,

1.7. pass a practical examination in the use of monitoring equipment,

1.8. Defend the presented radiation protection program at an oral examination/interview (generally held in conjunction with the practical examination) and satisfy the examiners that he/she is able to perform the duties of a Radiation Protection Advisor.

Accreditation in Ionising Radiation Safety is for a period of three years. In order to maintain their accreditation for a further three years, candidates must demonstrate that they are actively maintaining their expertise.
