Should ARPAB be the basis for radiation trainer certification in Australia?

ARPS has some concerns about the approach being taken by GSA in terms of competencies required for someone to be considered competent in radiation protection training.

Should ARPS be using ARPAB as the basis for accreditation of trainers?

For discussion of ARPS members.  What do you think?

Regards

Ron

Can ARPS provide a more detailed status on 'Expert'  or 'Professional' level Health Physics accreditation?
I think we are all awaiting some positive moves forward on this aspect as our medical physics peers forge ahead in the accreditation arena?

Should ARPAB be the basis for radiation trainer certification in Australia is a very nice and informative post. It looks that you are highly expert blogger. Your post is an excellent example of why I keep coming back to read your excellent quality content and scripts that is forever updated. Your all site is well managed and comprehensive. That was exactly what I needed to read today. Thank you

Just reminding everyone that consultation CLOSES on the 2nd October for the 'Vocational Graduate Certificate'in radiation safety.

I am amazed that 'we' are going down this road with a GradCert qualification for RSO's (which incidentally is excluding clinical and NIR radiation).

What is wrong with the accreditation methods in the UK and US?

How about those in the Commonwealth Government sector who have ARPANSA specified (and legislated) training requirements and existing processes which are approved as part of their Licences?

I'd like to see the RIS on the GSA approach and ponder how it meets OBPR requirements...

Isn't this meant to be a Regulatory issue anyhow??

The ideal situation would be for ARPAB to accredit radiation safety trainers. However, ARPAB is made up of 2 other organisations, and this generally makes for slow progress (they might not understand ARPS's need for accreditation, they may not be interested, etc). So if we want to get something up and running within the next 12 months (and there are time pressures... GSA is forging ahead creating training packages), ARPS should come up with its own criteria and accredit people as an interim measure. The process of getting ARPAB to accredit trainers can start now and run in parallel, but I don't expect that an ARPAB accrediation system can be developed and agreed to as quickly as what ARPS can do it.

I would support ARPAB accreditation being 'a' basis, but not 'the' basis.  ARPAB is a comprehensive accreditation.  Radiation Safety has several specialties.  An ARPAB accredited   person may have never had an association with some specialites and would not (IMHO) be sufficiently experienced to teach radiation safety to those groups.

Likewise, there are professionals that may not have the comprehensive experience to acheive ARPAB accreditation, but are sufficiently expert in their specialty to provide training to workers in that specialty.
