    The ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centre for Radiation Innovation (RadInnovate) is led by The Australian National University (ANU) in collaboration with the University of South Australia (UniSA) and the University of Adelaide (UA). The Training Centre boasts participation from over 16 partners spanning industry and government sectors, including Research and Development Corporations (RDCs), industry representatives, Commonwealth, State, and Territory governments, as well as research and technology organisations.

    We are seeking to attract an outstanding applicant who has the expertise in radiation sciences who will be expected to undertake research, education and service (including outreach). The research aspect of the position would include undertaking quality research activities and providing research leadership, including supporting the professional development of colleagues and need a record of research achievement as demonstrated by publications, conference papers and other research activities. For the education part of the position we are looking for someone with the ability and willingness to assist in the supervision of students working on research projects.

     

    To be successful you will need:

    • 1.       A doctoral qualification in radiation-based physics, radiochemistry, medical radiations or related subjects.

    Advanced skills in radiation science and technology.

    • 2.       Demonstrated experience in radiation modelling, including Monte Carlo simulations, dosimetry and radiation protection.
       
    • 3.       Demonstrated ability and experience in undertaking quality research activities and providing research leadership, including supporting the professional development of colleagues.

    • 4.       A record of research achievement as demonstrated by publications, conference papers and other research activities such as technical reports to senior government and/or industry, and an ability and commitment to contribute to bids for competitive external funding.

    • 5.       The ability and willingness to assist in the supervision of students working on research projects.

    • 6.       The ability to work as part of a team in a cross-disciplinary academic environment, an awareness or willingness to learn and incorporate the principles of socially responsible research, and an ability to meet deadlines.

    • 7.       High-level organisational skills and experience in managing projects with multiple priorities, monitoring workflow and in managing resources to meet objectives, timelines and deadlines.

    • 8.       Excellent oral and written English language skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate and interact effectively with a variety of staff and students in a cross-disciplinary academic environment and to foster respectful and productive working relationships with staff, students and colleagues at all levels.

    Desirable characteristics:

    • 1.       Proven ability to create and foster strong links with relevant industry, business, community and government organisations.

    • 2.       Evidence of experience relevant to the Training Centre’s research areas would be an advantage.

    Two vacancies are currently available, with at least one position intended for a lay member. Applications are especially encouraged from candidates with knowledge or experience in:

    The Team:

    Public Health Services (PHS) works to improve and protect the health and wellbeing of all Tasmanians by engaging with individuals, groups and communities statewide and nationally. The Radiation Protection Team within PHS is responsible for the administration of the Radiation Protection Act in Tasmania to protect people and the environment from the harmful effects of radiation. This is achieved through licensing, registration and a broad range of compliance and education activities.

    The Role:

    • Assist in the development and implementation of contemporary policies, procedures, codes of practice, standards, guidelines and legislation regulating the sale, storage, possession, and use of radiation apparatus and radioactive material in Tasmania.
    • Implement compliance activities, including inspections and investigations, to ensure the safe use of radiation apparatus and radioactive material in Tasmania.
    • Provide expert professional advice to a diverse range of clients on a broad range of policy issues pertaining to the regulatory system for radiation sources.
    • Monitor state, national and international policy trends and scientific developments using available resources, including literature and specialist meetings.

    About the opportunity

    As Australia’s newest uranium producer, we’re growing and looking for an experienced Environment and Radiation Advisor (ER) join our ER team at the Honeymoon mine site in South Australia.

    Reporting to the Environment & Radiation (ER) Superintendent, you’ll oversee the completion of environmental and radiation monitoring and management requirements, ensuring compliance with regulatory and non-regulatory standards.

    In addition, you’ll proactively report and mitigate risks related to environmental and radiation hazards and support the entire operations team showing leadership by providing expertise, guidance and training, to support a safe, compliant, and environmentally responsible mining operation.

    Radiation experience is experience is essential.

    The role will be FIFO from the Adelaide charter terminal or Port Augusta, direct to site on an 8:6 roster.  (We may consider other rosters.)

    In terms of specific responsibilities, you will:

    • Complete inspections to identify, monitor and manage environmental risks and ensure compliance with EPA licences, legislation, regulatory approvals and internal procedures. 
    • Assist with timely review and management of all environmental and radiation hazards and incidents.
    • Complete environmental monitoring, analysis and reporting, as detailed in the PEPR.
    • Complete radiation monitoring, analysis and reporting as per the site Radiation Management Plan and Radioactive Waste Management Plan.
    • Assist in managing the environmental and radiation database, including entering field data and external data reports, QA/QC checks, and assessments against compliance limits.
    • Immediately raise and appropriately manage regulatory compliance breaches and/or internal action or investigation level breaches.

    About You

    What you’ll need:

    • A tertiary qualification in Environmental Science or related field.
    • Significant experience in environmental and radiation monitoring in mining.
    • Sound knowledge of environmental and radiation legislation.
    • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyse and troubleshoot complex issues.
    • Excellent communication skills and the ability to develop positive working relationships.
    • Proficiency with monitoring equipment and software.
    • A willingness to work in remote locations and flexible hours.
    • A strong focus on and commitment to working safely.

    While not essential, Radiation Safety Officer Training and proficiency with GIS will be highly regarded.

    The Health Protection Service (HPS), Health Risk Facilities and Radiation Safety (HRF&RS) section is a seeking a Radiation Safety Officer to support the functions of the Radiation Safety unit and be part of a multidisciplinary section within HPS comprising of: Radiation Safety; Health Care Facilities, and Infection Control.

    As a Radiation Safety Officer in the Radiation Safety unit, you will be required to deliver a variety of regulatory activities related to radiation safety and help enforce the principles of radiation protection including the process of Justification, Optimisation and Limitation, and ensure that radiation exposures to workers, patients, members of the public and the environment are kept as low as reasonably achievable. This includes radiation source registration and user licensing, compliance monitoring and surveillance and enforcement actions under the Radiation Protection Act 2006, and related codes of practice. The role will be required to provide advice on radiation safety matters and facilitate community understanding of radiation safety issues and provide administrative support to the ACT Radiation Advisory Committee on behalf of the HPS.
