The Role
The Radiation Safety Advisor is a specialised safety role as part of the WHS Strategy and Assurance team and larger Defence Science & Technology Group (DSTG) WHS Enabling Capability team. The Radiation Safety Advisor works with Science & Technology staff to foster a positive and collaborative environment and to ensure radiation safety. The Radiation Safety Advisor will provide key support on radiation safety and compliance matters impacting the Fishermans Bend site. This is an exciting radiation safety role for someone looking to become a radiation safety specialist.

You will spend your days:

  • Assisting to provide advice on the application of radiation protection legislation and relevant Defence policies to unique and innovative applications of radiation
  • Working with the DSTG Radiation Safety Officer to assist in resolving problems using professional expertise, taking the initiative to identify alternative courses of action and implications for radiation activities.
  • Assisting with radiation source audits and inspections
  • Assisting with investigations of radiation events using the Defence Sentinel platform.
  • Assisting to review and developing DSTG radiation safety policies and procedures to meet legislation and Defence policies
  • Assisting the DSTG Radiation Safety Officer with radiation safety related tasks as required.
  • Attending the DSTG Radiation Safety Advisory Panel meetings and WHS meetings as required.
  • There will be some domestic business travel associated with this position.


About our Team
WHS Strategy and Assurance provides specialised safety services to support operational capability in DSTG.  As part of the larger DSTG Research Safety Enabling Capability team, WHS Strategy and Assurance supports safety in Hazardous Chemicals and Radiation, as well as supporting safety systems and incident investigations.

This role is part of the broader Research Safety Team, which is passionate about safety and committed to an inclusive and respectful workplace culture where all our people can achieve their potential. The current vacancy is located in Fishermans Bend, VIC and will report remotely to the DSTG Radiation Safety Officer based in Edinburgh, SA, while working closely with the Research Safety team at Fishermans Bend.

Our Ideal Candidate
As the Radiation Safety Advisor you will have working knowledge of the Australian radiation protection legislation (i.e. Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Act 1998) and some demonstrated experience in radiation safety.  You will have the ability assist with interpreting this legislation. You will be able to assist in undertaking analysis, and evaluate unique radiation activities for compliance and safety. 

As the Radiation Safety Advisor you will be self-motivated, organised, and able to build productive relationships. You will have good verbal and written communication skills and be ready to launch your career in radiation safety. You will have a passion for radiation safety, enjoy working with unique challenges, and be a positive and collaborative team member.
