ARPANSA is the Australian Government’s primary authority on radiation protection and nuclear safety. Our mission is to protect people and the environment from the harmful effects of radiation through regulation, research, services, and stakeholder engagement.
About the Section
The Facility Safety Section oversees the regulation of prescribed radiation facilities and nuclear installations. This includes assessing licence applications, conducting inspections, and developing regulatory guidance. Major facilities include the OPAL reactor and radiopharmaceutical production facilities at Lucas Heights, as well as accelerators located in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth.

Role Overview
As a Regulatory Officer, you will:
-
Assess applications for licences for nuclear installations, prescribed radiation facilities, and sources
-
Conduct inspections to ensure compliance with legislation, codes, and standards
-
Provide expert advice on radiation protection and nuclear safety
-
Contribute to the development of regulatory policies, strategies, and guidance
-
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
-
Support the work of the Regulatory Services Branch
About You
We’re looking for a candidate who:
-
Holds a degree in a STEM discipline, or has equivalent regulatory or operational experience
-
Ideally has experience in radiation protection
-
Demonstrates strong initiative, analytical skills, and sound decision-making
-
Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing
-
Builds positive, professional relationships
-
Is an Australian citizen and willing to travel interstate when required
-
Can obtain and maintain a national security clearance
Selection Criteria (Maximum 1000 words total)

Experience in a high-hazard, radiation protection, nuclear safety, or regulated environment

Ability to assess technical information, conduct inspections, and contribute to strategic thinking

Strong communication and negotiation skills
